Origin and history

The house located in the 42nd course of the Ladies in La Rochelle is a remarkable example of 16th and 17th century civil architecture. It consists of two building bodies organized around a central courtyard, with a three-span facade with two narrower sides. Each body has a side corridor and a rotating wooden staircase: the first staircase is central, while the second is located at the bottom of the building. The decorative elements, such as the windows surmounted by cut pediments, the carved masks and the open door, reflect the influence of the Renaissance.

The building body overlooking the street seems to date from the second half of the 16th century, while the second body may have been rebuilt in the 17th century, outside a recent elevation. The façade and arcade were protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 20 June 1928. This monument illustrates the architectural evolution of La Rochelle, a major port city where trade and cultural exchanges have encouraged the adoption of innovative styles.

The exact address, 42 cours des Dames, places this building in a historic district of La Rochelle, in Charente-Maritime (Department 17), region Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Although the sources do not specify its current use (visit, rental, accommodation), its status as a Historic Monument makes it a valuable testimony to the urban heritage of modern times.
