Origin and history
The house at 31 rue des Merciers in La Rochelle is a typical example of 16th-century wood-paned architecture. It survived the siege of 1628, although its ground floor was later modified. Its porch rests on an original wood lintel, and its facade, as well as its arcade, were protected by a registration order in 1928.
The structure has a slate feel on the pieces of wood, characteristic of the buildings of this period. Although the precise location is estimated as poor (note of 5/10), the official address corresponds to the rue des Merciers, in the historic centre of La Rochelle. This monument illustrates the civilian heritage of the city before the major upheavals of the seventeenth century.
The house, prior to the siege of 1628, bears witness to urban life in La Rochelle during the Renaissance. Wood and gable were common in port cities, where space was optimized. Its inscription as a Historic Monument in 1928 underscores its heritage importance, despite the transformations experienced over the centuries.
