Origin and history
This house in La Rochelle, dating from the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, is a typical example of civil architecture of this time. It consists of two bodies of two-storey, two-storey houses and an additional attic, separated by a middle courtyard. The side corridor and the wooden staircase, located in its middle part, are remarkable elements. The skylight bears the date of 1738, attesting to its construction at that time.
Inside, the layout of the rooms was rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century, but the staircase retains a shape inspired by the 17th century stairs, with four wooden poles forming nuclei. The façade and arcade of this house were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 20 June 1928, highlighting their heritage value.
Located at 41 rue des Merciers, this house illustrates the architectural style and construction techniques in the 18th century in La Rochelle. Its present state, although partially modified, makes it possible to appreciate the characteristics of a bourgeois dwelling of this time, notably by its spatial organization and its preserved decorative elements.
