Origin and history

The Charles de Rocca Serra house, located in Sartène, Corsica, was built in the 4th quarter of the 19th century for the father and uncle of the sponsor, Charles de Rocca-Serra. The latter, a khedival councillor in Cairo between 1880 and 1890, embodied in this architectural project his social success and his attachment to his native region. The building is directly inspired by Tuscan palazzi, with a marked symmetry and a double-flyed staircase, rare elements in the Corsican architecture of the time.

The building, classified as a Historic Monument in 2014, illustrates the mixture of Mediterranean and Eastern influences of a Corsican elite that flourished off the island. The facades, roof and exterior staircase are protected, highlighting their heritage value. The house also bears witness to the cultural exchanges between Corsica and Egypt through the figure of Rocca-Serra, whose atypical journey marked the local history.
