Origin and history
Cordienne House is an iconic building located in Justey, Haute-Saône, built in the early eighteenth century. Dated precisely from 1717 by an inscription on a lintel, it was quickly transformed after its construction. Its architecture combines a main house body, a tower topped by an imperial roof with a staircase and a 250-bolt dovecote, as well as a barn converted into a school room in the 19th century. External discounts, added at the beginning of the twentieth century, complete the whole, illustrating its functional evolution over the centuries.
The interior preserves the organization and decorative elements of the eighteenth century, such as fireplaces and panelling, offering an overview of the domestic life of the era. The tower, prior to 1717, suggested an older origin for some parts of the building. Ranked a historic monument in 1997, Cordienne House now belongs to the municipality of Justsey. Its exact address, 6 Rue du Général Étienney or Rue Patet-Tournante, reflects its anchor in the local urban fabric.
The pigeon tree, with its 250 bolts, recalls the economic importance of pigeon breeding at this time, reserved for lords or wealthy owners. The transformation of the barn into a school room in the 19th century reflects the adaptation of rural buildings to the growing educational needs under the Third Republic. Finally, the inscription for historical monuments in 1997 highlights its heritage value, thus protecting a remarkable example of civil architecture in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
