Origin and history

The Maison d'Aimé Césaire, located in the residential area of La Redoute in Fort-de-France, is a modest building dating from the mid-20th century. It consists of three bedrooms, a dining and living area, an office, water rooms and a peripheral gallery. The simplicity of its architecture contrasts with its historical importance, linked to the life and work of its illustrious occupant.

The library of the house preserves objects reflecting Aimé Césaire's interest in ethnology, including African statuettes and masks. The central office is divided into two spaces: one dedicated to work and the other to rest, separated by a wardrobe. These elements testify to the writer's intellectual and personal environment.

Classified Historic Monument by order of December 2, 2014, the house is protected in its entirety, including the house, outbuildings, garden, fence walls and floor of plot AE 70. This protection underlines its heritage and cultural importance for Martinique and beyond.
