Origin and history
The corner turret house, located in Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, is an emblematic 16th century building. Originally, it had half-timbers, which disappeared during a probably 17th-century renovation. This monument is closely linked to local history, notably thanks to Henry IV's repeated stays in the city, including a three-week visit in 1584, during which he visited Montaigne.
In recognition of the warm welcome extended by the consuls of Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, Henri IV anoblit two of them and granted them the privilege of raising a turret surmounted by a girouette at the corner of their home. This house is most likely one of those consuls. The date of 1583, engraved above the porch, probably corresponds to the construction of the turret, an architectural addition symbolizing this royal distinction.
Classified as a Historic Monument, this house is distinguished by its facades on the street and its cover, protected by a decree of 20 July 1955. Its location, at 53 rue de la République and 27 rue Victor-Hugo, makes it a point of interest in the city centre. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair, with an address confirmed by the Merimée data and approximate GPS coordinates.
