Jean Guiton - Former Mayor of La Rochelle Lived in 1628.

Origin and history

The house of Jean Guiton, located at 3 rue des Merciers in La Rochelle, is a building classified as historical monuments since 1923. Its stone façade, dated 1628, reflects the time when Jean Guiton, then mayor of the city, lived there. Although the current building was rebuilt in the 18th century, this engraved date recalls its historical importance and its connection to the municipal life of La Rochelle.

The architecture of the house is distinguished by its three ordered spans, typical of bourgeois houses of the time. Originally, it was not a corner house but was joined to another building, until the widening of Rue de la Gride in 1938. The interior has been profoundly altered, notably by the redevelopment of the shop on the ground floor in the 20th century, thus disturbing its original organization.

Classified for its façade by order of 27 October 1923, this house illustrates both the urban history of La Rochelle and the Protestant heritage of the region. Its modern staircase and its posterior courtyard add architectural elements contrasting with its original structure. Today, it remains a tangible testimony to the architectural and social evolution of the city between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries.
