Façade and the cover as well as the stairwell with interlacing balustrades: inscription by order of 31 October 1941
Origin and history
The House of the Apothecary in Toul is an emblematic monument of the city, dated the 16th century. This building illustrates the civil architecture of the Renaissance, a period marked by artistic and cultural renewal in Europe. Its name suggests an initial vocation related to pharmacy or medicine, although internal sources do not specify its exact use at the time.
In the Renaissance, cities like Toul, located in the present-day Greater East region, were dynamic centres of commerce and crafts. The bourgeois houses, like the Apothecary, reflected the prosperity of their owners and often played a role in local social and economic life. These buildings, with their adorned facades, also symbolized the development of knowledge, particularly in the fields of health and science.
