Origin and history
The house of L'Ecce Homo is an emblematic dwelling located in the commune of Saint-Mathurin-sur-Loire, Maine-et-Loire. Built between the 15th and 17th centuries, it bears witness to the civil architecture of this period in Anjou. Its facades and roofs, protected since 1971, reflect stylistic evolutions over three centuries, mixing medieval and Renaissance influences.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 6 July 1971, this house illustrates the local heritage preserved. Its inscription specifically concerns facades and roofs, as the Merimée base specifies. Although little documented about its occupants or its original function, it is part of the architectural landscape of the Loire Valley, an area marked by its history and cultural exchanges.
Saint-Mathurin-sur-Loire, attached to the department of Maine-et-Loire and to the region Pays de la Loire, was at that time a rural and riveric area. Houses like this often served as housing for local artisans, merchants or notables. Their preservation makes it possible today to study lifestyles and construction techniques then, in a context where Anjou was a dynamic province, between agriculture, commerce and the influence of seigneurial courts.
