Origin and history

The Poype House, located in Cremieu, Isère, is a 16th century house organized around an inner courtyard. Its main façade, on Rue Saint-Jean, is marked by a staircase tower in semi-outwork screws, made of cut stone. This tower features five chamfered windows with fine mouldings, including two double chamfered cellars. A cochère door in broken arch, very redesigned, gives access to the courtyard. Upstairs, remains of a lobed accolade groined bay with SCMCS inscription, as well as a broken arched bay. The façade on the Four-Banal street shows irregular piercings, including a pedestrian door with chamfered pedestals and a mulled-frame window topped by an egg-eye.

The construction of the house dates back to the late 15th or early 16th century, attributed to the family of La Poype-Serrières. In 1511, Humbert de La Poype-Serrières, chestnut of Crémieu, was the first known owner. In the 16th century, it moved to the branch of La Poype-Saint-Jullin. Gabriel de La Poype-Saint-Jullin, a defender of the city under the League and former governor of Gap, withdrew about 1591. His son, Louis de La Poype-Saint-Jullin, bequeathed by will in 1677 the house and other property to found the hospital Notre-Dame du Reclus, intended for the poor elderly in Crémieu. Transformed into a refuge, it underwent internal and external changes.

In 1865, the hospital was transferred to the new hospital, to the site of the former convent of the Visitation. The Maison de la Poype became a private home, sold successively to Mr. Reyboz in 1865, then to Mr. Neyret in 1907. Its facades and roofs on streets are inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 11 May 1981, thus preserving its remarkable architectural heritage, witness to the local history and social changes of Crémieu.
