Marie Durand - An emblematic Protestant figure Imprisoned 38 years for his faith

Origin and history

The house of Pierre and Marie Durand, located at Bouschet-de-Pranles in the commune of Pranles (Ardèche), is an emblematic building of the Protestant heritage of Vivarais. Dating from the 16th century, this old fortified house was restored to house the Protestant Vivarais Museum. It illustrates the life of a Protestant family during the religious persecutions of the eighteenth century, while evoking the traditional rural life of the region.

Marie Durand is a central figure of this place, known for having spent thirty-eight years imprisoned in the tower of Constance in Aigues-Mortes, refusing to abjure her Protestant faith. The house, classified as a historical monument in 1969, thus preserves the memory of religious resistance in Vivarais. The museum offers a dive into local history, mixing architectural heritage and testimonies of religious repression.

The building, a private property, is today a place of memory and visit, allowing to discover the history of the Protestants of Vivarais through exhibitions and reconstructions of daily life. Its 1969 ranking underlines its historical and cultural importance, both for the region and for the history of Protestantism in France.
