Origin and history
The house of Rabelais is a mansion located in Chinon, in the department of Indre-et-Loire, in the region Centre-Val de Loire. Built in the 16th century, it is a typical example of the civil architecture of the French Renaissance in this region. The building, made of stone, underwent major transformations in the 20th century, especially in the 1970s, when it was converted into a store, which partly altered its original appearance. Subsequent restoration found some characteristic elements of its initial structure.
The house has been listed as historic monuments since May 28, 1926, recognizing its heritage value. Its interior staircase, integrated with the façade, and its interior distribution recall other buildings of the same period in Chinon, such as the one located at 4 rue de la Lamprey. Despite the changes it had undergone, it retained significant architectural features, such as its stone staircase and its spatial organization, which reflected the constructive practices of the sixteenth century.
The precise location of the house is indicated as 28 rue Rabelais and 2 rue de la Lamprey, although there are inconsistencies between the addresses mentioned in the sources (Mérimée base and GPS coordinates). These differences reflect the challenges associated with the documentation and preservation of historical monuments, especially those that have undergone major changes. The house, although protected, does not appear systematically open to the public, and its current use (visit, rental, etc.) is not clearly documented in available sources.
