Facade on street and corresponding roof (Case B 163): inscription by decree of 5 November 1965

Origin and history

La Maison Deixonne is a historic monument located in the commune of Villefranche-de-Conflent, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales (66). This building, with a three-storey façade, is distinguished by a sober and functional architecture. The façade is fitted only on the ground floor, with some elements laid in crime, a technique of laying stones that enhances their slice. The arches, in the middle of the hanger, are without a frame chamfer, which gives them a characteristic simplicity.

To the right of the facade opens a wide portal topped by a straight stone lintel. This architectural detail, combined with the absence of superfluous ornamentation, suggests a utility construction, possibly linked to a commercial or residential function. Deixonne House was partially protected by a decree of 5 November 1965, which specifically concerns the street façade and the corresponding roof. This ranking reflects its heritage importance in the urban fabric of Villefranche-de-Conflent.

Villefranche-de-Conflent, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a medieval fortified city whose urban planning reflects a history marked by commercial and military exchanges. Houses such as Maison Deixonne, with their architectural characteristics, illustrate the adaptation of civilian buildings to the geographical and historical constraints of the region. Their preservation makes it possible to understand the way of life and the techniques of construction of the times in this part of the Pyrénées-Orientales.

The location of Maison Deixonne, at 4 bis rue Saint-Jacques, places the building in the heart of a historic district where Catalan and French influences are mixed. Although the available sources do not specify the exact date of its construction, its architectural style and its inscription among the Historical Monuments in 1965 make it a valuable witness to the urban evolution of Villefranche-de-Conflent. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair, with a score of 5 out of 10, suggesting an approximate identification in the geographic databases.
