Origin and history

The house of the English is a medieval residence located in the heart of the village of Chalard, in Haute-Vienne. Built in the 13th century, it is remarkable for its preserved architecture, including its Gothic bays and its street façade, characteristic of the houses of small traders of the period. Unlike other local dwellings, it has not undergone any major transformation, offering an intact testimony of medieval urban planning.

The façade, classified as a historic monument in 1987, illustrates the constructive techniques of the Middle Ages: a direct access to the cellar from the street for the storage of goods, a ground floor with ground bays, and a floor pierced with geminate bays decorated with carved masks. Inside, stone arches structure the ground floor, highlighting its original commercial use. Its inscription in the inventory of historical monuments makes it a protected heritage, representative of the medieval Limousin.

The building embodies the daily life of 13th-century artisans and merchants in New Aquitaine, where wood-paned or stone houses served as both a dwelling, a workshop and a place of sale. Its exceptional conservation allows us to study the evolution of architectural techniques and commercial practices in the small rural villages of the time. Today, it remains a major historical landmark in the Chalard landscape, reflecting the local economic life under the Old Regime.
