Origin and history
The Maison des Appeaux, located in Ségur-le-Château, is a 16th-century building built to house the Cour des Appeaux, a superior judicial institution whose decisions were without appeal. This building, with a rectangular three-level plan, is distributed by a spiral staircase housed in a round tower. A venom separates him from a second building, probably dedicated to court meetings. The south facade, centered around the stair turret, features cross-sectional bays, characteristic of Renaissance architecture.
The court of the Appals of Ségur-le-Château was established in 1438, but it was in the sixteenth century, under Charles IX, that this house was probably built for the senechal of Robe-Courte, after the erection of the Viscounty of Limoges in Marquisate (1561). The court operated until 1750, when it was merged with the senechal court of Saint-Yrieix. This place served as a residence for Lords Judges at the Appeaux, thus marking its importance in the local judicial organization.
The facades and roofs of the Maison des Appeaux were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 22 October 1976, thus recognizing its heritage value. Today, the building bears witness to the judicial history of the region and the civil architecture of the Renaissance in Limousin.
