Origin and history
The Maison des artisanes is a historic monument located at 4 rue des Artisans in Colmar, in the Haut-Rhin department. Built in 1901 by architect F. Kreyer, it embodies the Art Nouveau style, a popular architectural current at the time. Originally, it housed the meeting room of the artisanal chamber (Gewerbeverein) and the accommodation of its president, reflecting its central role in local economic life.
Inaugurated in 1902, the House of Craftsmen was built following the destruction of several houses, necessary for the creation of the rue des Artisans. This building, emblematic of Colmarian architecture, has seen its use evolve over time: it now hosts inappropriate child services. Its façade and street roof were listed as historic monuments on 29 October 1975, recognizing its heritage value.
The building illustrates the importance of artisanal corporations in Alsace at the beginning of the 20th century, a region marked by a strong artisanal and industrial tradition. The craft chamber, which sat there, played a key role in the professional and social organization of local trades. The Art Nouveau style, characterized by its curved lines and nature-inspired motifs, also reflects the influence of European artistic currents in this border region.
The Maison des artisans remains a significant example of the Alsatian architectural heritage, combining utility and innovative aesthetics. Its inscription as a historic monument underscores its historical and artistic interest, while preserving the memory of the artisanal activities that shaped Colmar and its region.
