Origin and history
The Maison des Cariatides de Delle is an iconic late Renaissance building built in the second half of the 16th century. Located in the Territory of Belfort, it is distinguished by its architecture adorned with cariatides, decorative elements typical of this period. The building is located in 2 Place de la République, although GPS sources indicate an approximate address at 10 rue des Écoles.
Classified as a Historical Monument, the House of Cariatides saw its facade and roof inscribed in the additional inventory by ministerial decree of 27 July 1970. This status specifically protects the elements visible from the public square, as the cadastre specifies (park AK 11). The location of the monument, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), reflects a moderate knowledge of its exact location.
At the time of its construction, the region of Franche-Comté, then under Spanish or French influence depending on the period, experienced an architectural boom marked by cultural exchanges between the Burgundian Netherlands and Italy. The bourgeois houses, like that of the Cariatids, showed the prosperity of cities and the role of local elites. These buildings served as both a residence and a symbol of economic or political power.
Today, the Maison des Cariatides remains a heritage landmark of Delle, although information on its access (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources. Its interest lies as much in its Renaissance style as in its integration into the historical urban fabric of this border town with Switzerland.
