Origin and history

The house of the Brand consorts, located in Arbois in the vineyards of Jura, is a medieval building dating back to the 4th quarter of the 13th century. Its most remarkable element is a Gothic wine cellar, built in 1322 by Mahaut d'Artois, Countess of Burgundy and d'Artois, to preserve the wines of the county. This cellar, called the cellar of Queen Jeanne in tribute to Jeanne II of Burgundy (daughter of Mahaut and queen of France by her marriage with Philippe V le Long), is a rare example of medieval wine architecture in the region.

The original mansion, located on 5 rue de Bourgogne, was transformed over the centuries: bequeathed in 1601 to a Catholic congregation, it lost its initial structure to a chapel and then to housing. Only the cellar, with two naves and crossed dogives, remained intact, showing the importance of wine in the economy and Burgundy culture. Today, it belongs to a private winery and remains a symbol of the wine heritage of Jura.

The cellar was listed for historical monuments on December 9, 1941, recognizing its architectural and historical value. His name evokes Jeanne II of Burgundy, whose lineage (via his daughter Jeanne III, Duchess of Burgundy by marriage with Eudes IV) made the region lasting. The site is part of a wider network of wine heritage, including the Jura wine tourism and the Jura wine route, while recalling the role of noble women in the management of medieval vineyards.
