Origin and history
The House of Orphans of Dole, now converted into a school, came into being in 1689, when it was founded by the canon of Broissia. This charitable institution, designed to welcome and educate orphans, reflects the social initiatives of the local Church at the end of the seventeenth century. Its installation on the current site dates back to the early eighteenth century, a period of construction of buildings still visible today.
The monument, partially protected by the Historical Monuments, consists of several architectural elements. Parcels BX 13 and 14 have been listed since 1991, while main buildings, including a bridge, have been classified since 1993. The property is now shared between the municipality of Dole and an association, thus perpetuating its collective vocation.
Located 27 rue Pasteur, Maison des Orphelins is part of the urban landscape of Dole, a historic Jura town marked by its religious and educational past. Its location, noted as satisfactory a priori (level 6/10), makes it an accessible witness to the social history of Franche-Comté. Available sources, such as Monumentum, highlight its long-lasting role in the community, although the details of its daily functioning remain partial.
