Origin and history

The Petits-Plaids house is an iconic building located in the upper town of Provins, in Seine-et-Marne. Dating mainly from the 13th century, it is distinguished by its vaulted cellar, which bears witness to its medieval origin. The lower room dates back to the 12th century, revealing a gradual construction over several decades. This monument illustrates the civil architecture of the period, marked by robust construction techniques and varied uses, ranging from housing to administrative or commercial functions.

The house was the subject of successive protections in the 20th century. Its vaulted cellar was listed as historic monuments in 1932, recognizing its heritage value. Later, in 1962, facades and roofs were classified, consolidating its preservation. Located in Place du Châtel, it is part of a remarkable medieval urban complex, typical of the fortified towns of Île-de-France. Its location, in the heart of Provins, a UNESCO World Heritage city, reinforces its historical and tourist significance.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its status as a Historic Monument and its integration into the architectural landscape of Provins. Although information about its precise uses or historical occupants is scarce, the Petits-Plaids house remains a tangible testimony of urban life in the Middle Ages. Its state of conservation and the protections it enjoys now allow us to study the techniques of construction and the spatial organization of medieval houses in Île-de-France.
