Origin and history
Diane de Poitiers' house, also known as Diane de Poitiers' tower, is a building located in La Roche-de-Glun, in the Drôme department. Probably built in 1342 as a watchtower, it was redesigned in the Renaissance. It houses a spiral staircase and offers a view of the village. Its ground floor, the Salle des Gardes, has a monumental fireplace decorated with two busts in medallions.
Acquired by the municipality in 1991, the tower now houses the municipal library. The Salle des Gardes hosts temporary exhibitions. The tower and the chimney, with its medallions, were inscribed in historical monuments on 27 June 1983. The building illustrates the architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, while remaining anchored in local history.
The date of 1342 corresponds to the granting of a charter of freedoms to the inhabitants by the Dauphin, which could explain the initial construction of the tower. Its defensive and symbolic role reflects the political and social stakes of the time. Today, the monument is a cultural place open to the public, managed by the municipality.
