Origin and history
The house of Beaumontois in Périgord is part of the medieval complex of the bastide founded in 1272. Its anterior part, made of cut stone under a slate broken roof, contrasts with its posterior part in rubble covered with flat tiles. The latter rests directly on the medieval wall, testifying to the integration of the houses into the defensive system of the city. The rear façade, dating from the late 13th or early 14th century, retains original elements related to the foundation of the bastide.
The main façade, overlooking the central square (now Jean Moulin Square), was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century, as attests its absence on the cadastre of 1840. Only the façade on the rampart and its corresponding roof have been protected since 1952, highlighting their heritage value. The ensemble reflects the architectural evolution of the bastide, between medieval heritage and modern transformations.
The square-side covered piles, absent from the 19th century archives, suggest later structural changes. The monument, although partially preserved, offers a characteristic example of medieval civilian habitat in Périgord, mixing defensive and residential functions. Its listing in the inventory of Historical Monuments in 1952 concerns only the oldest elements, linked to the ramparts.
