Origin and history

The house of Monpazier is part of the architectural complex of the central square of this bastide, founded in 1284 on the order of Jean de Graville, Sénéchal de Guyenne. Originally, the square was lined with 22 cornered buildings on its north and south sides, and six on its east and west sides. Today, only 17 of these buildings remain, reflecting the planned medieval urban planning characteristic of the southwestern bastides.

The facade and covered gallery of this house were classified as Historic Monument by decree of 21 December 1904. This classification protects a key element of Monpazier's architectural identity, where covered galleries served both as a shelter for merchants and as a place of sociability. The precise location of the house, on the place in Cornières, makes it a representative example of medieval urban habitat in Aquitaine.

The administrative coordinates place this monument in the commune of Monpazier (code Insee 24280), in the Dordogne, in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Although the exact address mentions the place at Cornières or 25 Rue Notre-Dame, geographical accuracy remains limited (level 5/10 depending on the sources). This building thus illustrates the heritage of the bastides, new cities created in the Middle Ages to structure the territory and promote trade.
