Origin and history

The house of Monpazier is part of the architectural complex of the central square of this bastide, founded in 1284 on the order of Jean de Graville, Sénéchal de Guyenne. The square, designed with covered galleries on its four sides, initially housed 22 cornered buildings on the north and south sides, and six on the east and west sides. Today, only 17 of these buildings remain, reflecting planned medieval urban planning.

The facades of this house, including its wooden galleries and roofs, as well as the ground under the arcades, were protected by a classification order under the Historic Monuments on 23 October 1961. The property is shared between individuals and the municipality of Monpazier, reflecting its status both heritage and living, integrated into the current urban fabric.

The precise location of the house is indicated as being on the place in Cornières (official address) or near the Rue de la Justice, depending on the geographical sources. However, cartographic accuracy is considered poor (note 5/10), which may complicate an accurate identification without on-site visits. The protected elements underline the importance of medieval structures still visible, despite subsequent transformations.
