Key figures

Jean de Graville - Sénéchal de Guyenne Ordonna built Monpazier in 1284.

Origin and history

The house of Monpazier is part of the architectural complex of the central square of this bastide, founded in 1284 on the order of Jean de Graville, Sénéchal de Guyenne. The square, designed according to an orthogonal plan typical of medieval bastides, was initially lined with 22 corneal buildings on its north and south sides, and six on its east and west sides. Today, there are only 17 remaining, including this house, bearing witness to the original urban structure.

The facades on the square and the corresponding roofs of these buildings were protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 2 January 1962. This classification specifically concerns cadastre A 481, highlighting the heritage value of these medieval civilian buildings. The precise location of the house is indicated as being on the place in Cornières, with an approximate address at 12 Rue de la Justice.

Monpazier, located in the Dordogne department (code Insee 24280), embodies the 13th century planned town planning in Aquitaine. The bastide, with its covered galleries and horns, reflects a structured social and commercial organization, where these houses served both as houses and as places of exchange for merchants and artisans of the time.
