Origin and history
The house of Monpazier is part of the architectural complex of the central square of this bastide, founded in 1284 on the order of Jean de Graville, Sénéchal de Guyenne. Originally, the square was lined with 22 cornered buildings on its north and south sides, and six on the east and west sides. Today, only 17 of these buildings, including this house, have passed through the centuries. Their facades and roofs, protected since 1962, illustrate the planned medieval town planning, characteristic of the bastides of the South-West.
The square, conceived as a commercial and social space, was surrounded by covered galleries promoting exchanges. These corner houses, typical of medieval civil architecture, housed both houses, stalls and warehouses. Their arrangement reflects a rigorous urban organization, where each plot had a specific function in the economic and community life of the bastide.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 2 January 1962, this house bears witness to the partial preservation of the built heritage of Monpazier. The protected elements are limited to the facades on the square and the corresponding roofs, stressing the importance attached to the conservation of the outer envelope. The approximate location, noted as "passable" (level 5/10), indicates uncertainties about the accuracy of the available coordinates.
