17th century gate, including vantals (H 524): inscription by decree of 23 August 1946

Origin and history

The house at 5 rue de la Liberté in Sarlat-la-Canéda is a 17th-century civil building. It is representative of the domestic architecture of this period, marked by careful decorative elements. Its door frame, composed of a decorative frieze forming a bandeau and columns in a canned half-relief, illustrates the artisanal know-how of the period. These architectural details, typical of the emerging classical style, reflect a desire to beautify urban facades.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 23 August 1946, this house owes its protection to the exceptional quality of its 17th century door, including its vantals. This ranking shows the importance attached to preserving the local built heritage, even for partial elements such as an entrance. Approximate localization, noted as "passible" (level 5/10), suggests a possible visual identification, but without optimal geographic accuracy.

Sarlat-la-Canéda, a medieval and reborn town, was at that time a dynamic center of the Périgord, marked by commerce, crafts and a rising bourgeoisie. The houses of this period often served as houses for local merchants or notables, playing a role in the social and economic structure of the city. Their decoration, though modest, displayed a social status, as evidenced by the columns and friezes of this house.
