Origin and history

This house in Besançon, listed as a Historic Monument, has a characteristic 16th century architecture. It consists of a house on street built on a vaulted basement or cradle, and a second parallel house overlooking a courtyard. Access is via a covered corridor with a French ceiling, while a staircase with an open cage, partly masonry and frame, serves the floors. A courier extends this staircase to connect the secondary home, illustrating a functional and typical spatial organization of bourgeois houses of the time.

The house on street, dating from the first half of the 16th century, preserves traces of its history with two bays in aisle transformed later into a butcher's arcade. The house on courtyard was added in the 17th century, reflecting a gradual extension of the building. In the 19th or 20th century, the attic of the house on street was converted into an apartment, reflecting the successive adaptations of the house to the changing needs of its occupants. The street façade and its cover were protected by a registration order in 1937, highlighting their heritage value.

The precise address of this house is 11 rue Claude-Puillet in Besançon, in the Doubs department. Although its GPS location is approximate, it remains a remarkable example of Renaissance civil architecture in Franche-Comté. The transformations over the centuries, including the addition of the shop and the attic, illustrate the evolution of urban and domestic uses in this historic region.
