The facade on the square and the cover: inscription by decree of 25 October 1937

Origin and history

The house located in 9 Place du Huit-September (formerly Place Saint-Pierre) in Besançon dates from the 4th quarter of the 18th century and the 1st quarter of the 19th century. It is representative of the civil architecture of this period of transition between classical and post-revolutionary styles. Its inscription as a Historical Monument by decree of 25 October 1937 specifically concerns the facade on the square and the cover, remarkable elements of its built heritage.

At that time Besançon, a strategic city of Franche-Comté, was undergoing a phase of urban modernization after its permanent connection with France in 1678. Bourgeois houses, like this one, reflect the economic and social development of a local elite, often linked to commerce, crafts or administration. Their location in the city centre, near public squares, emphasizes their role in the social and political life of the city.

The current location accuracy is considered "passable" (note 5/10), and the historical address (place Saint-Pierre) recalls the toponymic upheavals associated with revolutionary events. The house, although protected, does not seem open to the public for regular visits, according to available information. Its state of conservation and current use (housing, commerce or other) are not specified in the sources consulted.
