Origin and history
The house at 1 quai Vauban in Besançon is a monument listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments since 1933. This building is distinguished by its facade and roof, protected by a decree, as well as its strategic location along the old city walls. Its inscription is part of a larger set including remains of urban fortifications, such as the counterscarp of the bastioned tower of Rivotte or the guard corps of the eighteenth century, bearing witness to the military importance of Besançon throughout the eras.
The house is directly associated with the Besançon Citadel and its urban enclosure, which are themselves classified as UNESCO World Heritage. The protections extended in 2019 cover various elements of the ramparts, including buried remains and bastioned towers, highlighting the historic defensive role of the city. The Vauban wharf, where the house is located, illustrates the integration of civilian habitat into a landscape marked by military infrastructure, typical of border towns like Besançon.
Although the information on the original use of the house is limited, its inscription among the Historical Monuments reflects its architectural value and its link to the urban history of Besançon. The accuracy of its location is assessed as poor (note 5/10), which may indicate uncertainties on certain topographic details. No information is available on its current accessibility (visits, rentals, etc.).
