Origin and history
The House located at 21 Quai Vauban in Besançon is a historic monument whose facade, roof, pavement and wharf were inscribed by arrest on 16 September 1933. This building is closely linked to the defensive history of the city, notably through its association with the Citadelle and the urban enclosure of Besançon.
In 2019, new elements of the urban enclosure were protected by a decree of 10 September. These protections concern remains buried in ramparts, bastioned towers (such as those of Rivotte, Brégille and Saint-Pierre), as well as guard bodies dating from the 18th century. These remains testify to the strategic importance of Besançon throughout the centuries.
The location of the House on the Vauban wharf reinforces its link to the city's military and urban history. The wharf, located near the Citadel, was a key point for defence and access control in Besançon. The accuracy of its location is assessed as fair, with an address confirmed in the Merimée database.
No information is available on opening to the public, visiting, or any current use (room rental, guest rooms). The House remains an architectural and historical testimony, integrated into the urban and defensive landscape of Besançon.
