Origin and history
The house at 24 quai Vauban in Besançon is a historic monument whose facade and roof were inscribed by decree of 16 September 1933. This building is directly associated with the city's defensive history, especially through its link with the Citadelle and the urban enclosure of Besançon, major elements of the local military heritage.
The building is part of a larger set of protected remains, including parts of the ramparts, bastioned towers (such as those of Rivotte and Brégille), as well as 18th-century guard corps. These elements, spread over several plots, reflect the evolution of Besançon fortifications, with protections extended to buried remains or structures still visible, such as Chamars' guard corps or that of the Arenas Gate. A second registration, by order of 10 September 2019, extended the protection to these remains, consolidating their preservation.
The location of the house, on the Vauban quay, places the monument in a historical district close to the banks of the Doubs, where urban planning was marked by the defensive and strategic needs of the city. GPS coordinates and approximate address (32 quai Vauban) confirm its anchoring in the city centre, close to other classified sites. The accuracy of its location is estimated as "a priori satisfactory", based on available data.
Although the practical information on current visits or uses (rents, guest rooms) is not specified, the monument remains an architectural witness of the 17th and 18th centuries, during which period Besançon, then fortified city under Spanish and then French influence, actively developed its defence systems. The house, by its association with the urban enclosure, illustrates the civil and military role of the buildings of that time.
Available sources, including Monumentum and Merimée data, highlight the heritage importance of the site, while leaving some areas shadowed on its specific history. The lack of details about its original use or its historical occupants limits the reconstruction of its past, but its listing as Historic Monuments makes it a key element of the bisontin cultural landscape.
