Origin and history

La Maison du Centaure is a private hotel located in Loches, in the Indre-et-Loire department (Centre-Val de Loire region). Built between the first half of the 16th century and the first quarter of the 17th century, it illustrates the civil architecture of the Renaissance in Touraine. The monument is distinguished by its facades on street and courtyard, as well as by its roofs, protected since 1927, while its interiors were inscribed in 2012.

One of the most notable elements of the house is an integrated relief fragment above a bay on the first floor. This bas-relief, from an old chimney, represents a mythological scene: Dejanire, Hercules and the centaur Nessus. This artistic detail highlights the refinement of interior decorations, typical of the aristocratic homes of the time.

Located on 14 rue du Château, the House of the Centaure is a testimony of the town planning of Lochois, marked by the proximity of the medieval castle. Its ranking among historical monuments reflects its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its carved elements. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its protected property status, without specifying its current use (visit, rental, or private residence).
