Origin and history

The Maison du Chapeau Blanc is an emblematic building of Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy. This monument is distinguished by its hybrid architecture, combining stone parts and wood sections, typical of local buildings. Although its exact period of construction is not specified, its protected elements attest to a significant architectural heritage, with facades and roofs classified or inscribed from the beginning of the twentieth century.

The legal protections of the Maison du Chapeau Blanc were introduced in two stages: the facades and roofs of the stone part were inscribed by order on 1 March 1928, while those of the wooden part, as well as the gardens, were classified on 12 August 1936. These measures reflect the heritage value of the site, integrated into an exceptional medieval urban setting. Mont-Saint-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts millions of visitors every year, and this type of house illustrates the daily life and local craftsmanship of past times.

The location of the Maison du Chapeau Blanc, indicated as "5007 Triage du Chapeau Blanc", suggests a link to the mountain's historical activities, potentially related to the triage (management) of resources or commodities. The Insee code of the commune (50353) confirms its anchoring in the department of Manche, in the Normandy region. Despite a geographical precision deemed "passable" (note of 5/10), the monument remains a witness to the traditional constructive techniques and urban evolution of this mythical site.
