Origin and history
The 13th century house on the public square of Bèze is a rare testimony of medieval civil architecture in this region. This building, whose façade was classified as Monument Historique by order of 8 June 1914, was originally part of a larger abbatial ensemble. Its architectural style reflects the construction techniques of the Middle Ages, with local materials and a spatial organization typical of the dwellings of that time.
Bèze, located in Côte-d'Or, was at this time a place marked by the presence of the Benedictine abbey founded in the 7th century. This abbey, now destroyed, played a central role in the religious, economic and social life of the region. The 13th century house, probably linked to the activities of the abbey, illustrates the importance of monastic establishments in the development of medieval villages. These buildings were often used as homes for monks, artisans or servants working for the abbey.
The protection of the façade in 1914 underscores the heritage value of this monument, one of the few still visible traces of the former abbey. The available data indicate that the exact location of this building is approximate, with an accuracy considered "passible" (note 5/10). Today, its current use (visit, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the sources, but its status as a Historic Monument makes it a key element of local heritage.
