Origin and history
The fort house of Alligny-en-Morvan is a medieval building located in the Nièvre department, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It was built in the 12th century by Hugues d'Alligny upon his return from the second crusade, then restored between 1645 and 1660. This monument illustrates the defensive architecture typical of strong morvandelle houses, adapted to local reliefs and needs.
Over the centuries, the strong house has undergone major changes. In the 17th century it was redesigned, but much of the buildings surrounding the circular courtyard were demolished in the 19th century. Today, there is only one concave housing body, surrounded by moats that are always fed by living water sources. These moats surround the original seat, testifying to its defensive past.
The fortress of Alligny-en-Morvan was listed as a historical monument by order of 17 November 1998. This protection covers facades, roofs, moats, the house's seat, as well as a 15th century fireplace located on the ground floor. The site remains a remarkable example of Morvan's architectural and military history, marked by the crusades and changes of the modern era.
