Origin and history

The fort house of Cheuge is a building located in the municipality of the same name, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This type of construction, typical of medieval or post-medieval rural areas, often served as a fortified residence for local lords or wealthy families. Strong houses played a defensive and symbolic role, reflecting the social status of their owners in a time of frequent insecurity.

In the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, strong houses were often integrated into farms or seigneurial estates. They testify to a time when rural nobility and peasantry coexisted in a feudal or semi-feudal system. These buildings, less imposing than the castles, were nevertheless important markers of the landscape and territorial organization, often linked to the economic and social history of the surrounding villages.
