Origin and history
Gourville Fort House, located in Prunay-en-Yvelines (Yvelines), is a fortified castle built in the early 15th century. This historic monument was erected by François de Brilhac, abbot of Benedictine monks of Saint-Père de Chartres, to serve as an abbey residence. It then became the property of the bishops of Chartres, thus marking its religious and institutional importance in the region.
In the 17th century, a pavilion was added north of the main building, with a four-paned roof. This pavilion, potentially used as a guard, illustrates the architectural evolution of the site over the centuries. The protected elements include facades, roofs, a spiral staircase, as well as several remarkable chimneys, bearing witness to its rich medieval heritage.
The ensemble, surrounded by the remains of an ancient enclosure, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 7 December 1972. Today, this private site preserves traces of its fortified and religious past, while being part of the historic landscape of Île-de-France.
The location of the monument, although documented (1 Rue Noguette, Prunay-en-Yvelines), is considered to be of fair accuracy (note 5/10), reflecting the limitations of the available geographical data. Its exact address is referenced in the Merimée database under Insee code 78506, confirming its territorial anchoring in the Yvelines.
Legal protections cover specific architectural elements, such as the facades of the main building, the annexed pavilion, and a building at the southeast corner. These measures aim to preserve the authenticity of a monument marked by its abbatial and episcopal use, as well as its subsequent transformations.
Although the fortified house of Gourville is not systematically open to the public, its history reflects the dynamics of power and religious heritage in Île-de-France between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
