Origin and history

The Epronnière's fort house, located in Livré-la-Touche (formerly Livré), is a 14th century building, renovated in the following centuries. It has been classified as a Historic Monument since September 30, 1994, including the nearby chapel and the today filled moats. This monument illustrates the defensive architecture typical of the medieval Anjou, a region then integrated into the Barony of Craon under the Old Regime.

Livré-la-Touche, a rural commune of Mayenne in the Pays de la Loire, was historically attached to Anjou (Haut-Anjou). Its territory, marked by a dominant agricultural occupation (97.1% of the land in 2018), retains traces of its feudal past, as evidenced by this strong house. The municipality, renowned in 2008, now has 729 inhabitants and remains rooted in a preserved rural and historical heritage.

The strong house of the Grooner is linked to the family of Scépeaux, especially its branch of the Grooner, mentioned among the local personalities. Its classification also covers the soil of the cadastral plot and the remains of the moat, highlighting its heritage importance. The site, although partially modified over the centuries, remains a significant example of the fortified Angelian residences.

The region's altered ocean climate, with mild winters and cool summers, may have influenced the conservation of building materials. The town, located in South-Mayenne, is today a place of memory where medieval history and contemporary rural life mix together, as evidenced by local activities (football, agriculture) and the presence of other monuments, such as the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption.

Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its status as a Historical Monument and its approximate address: Le Domaine de l'Epronnière, 53400 Livré-la-Touche. No information is provided on its current accessibility or contemporary uses (visits, rentals), suggesting a mainly heritage and memorial vocation.
