Origin and history
The Roman-aux-Bois Fort House is a building built during the second half of the 16th century, typical of the fortified residences of the Renaissance. Located in the eponymous village of the Vosges department, it illustrates the civil defensive architecture of this period, marked by political tensions and local protection needs. Its registration as a Historical Monument by decree of 13 October 1987 underlines its heritage importance, particularly for its state of conservation and its regional representativeness.
The fortified houses, like Romain-aux-Bois, played a central role in the social and economic organization of the Lorrain and Vosges countryside. They served both as a residence for local lords or wealthy families, as a storage place for crops, and as a refuge in the event of conflicts. Their establishment often reflected the challenges of territorial control, in a region at the time marked by rivalries between duchy and kingdoms, as well as by a rural economy dominated by agriculture and livestock.
The precise location of the monument, 1 Rue du Potel in Romain-aux-Bois (88320), is attested by the Merimée bases and GPS coordinates. Although the sources do not detail its event history, its protected status and architectural structure make it a notable example of Vosges built heritage. The Creative Commons license associated with available visuals facilitates its dissemination and cultural enhancement.
