House of Thural

Origin and history

Thural Fort House is a building located in the commune of Magland, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This type of construction, characteristic of medieval or post-medieval rural areas, was generally used as a fortified residence for local lords or wealthy families. Strong houses played a defensive, residential and symbolic role, reflecting the social status of their owners.

In the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, strong houses were often integrated into a network of small seigneuries or agricultural estates. They reflect a period when security and local self-government were essential, especially in areas far from the major power centres. Their architecture, often sober but robust, was adapted to the protection and management needs of surrounding lands.
