House; facades and roofs of the communes with both towers; floor of the court (box A 82): registration by order of 17 February 1997

Origin and history

The fort house of the Peage in Savigny is mentioned for the first time in 1110 in the cartular of the Abbey of Savigny, although the current buildings date mainly from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. This historic monument underwent later modifications in the 16th and 17th centuries, especially in its interior decorations, as evidenced by the 16th century chimneys and wall paintings still visible today.

The protected elements of this strong house include the facades and roofs of the communes with their two towers, as well as the courtyard floor. These protections were formalized by a registration order dated 17 February 1997. The site is located in Savigny, in the Rhône department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, with a specific address indicated as 5376 Le Péage.

Although GPS location is considered to be of poor accuracy (note 5/10), Peage's strong house remains a significant example of the region's defensive and residential medieval architecture. Its history is linked to that of Savigny Abbey, whose cartular provides the first written trace of the place. Subsequent transformations reflect the evolution of architectural needs and styles between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
