Pierre Farnier - Lord and merchant draper
Sponsor of the castle in the 16th century.
Origin and history
The castle of Farnier, located in Brives-Charensac in Haute-Loire, is a strong house erected at the edge of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Built by Pierre Farnier, seigneur of Saint-Martin-de-Fugères and a drapier merchant, it illustrates the defensive architecture of this period while integrating later decorative elements, including 18th-century panelling, ironwork and stucco.
The building, organized around an inner courtyard, preserves medieval remains such as a cradle vault, a tower of staircase in a screw, a scauguette and a brace. In the 20th century, a circular tower disappeared, partially changing its structure. The façades, roofs, the entrance gate and a 16th century door have been protected since 1986.
The property, a quadrilateral of buildings and walls, reflects the architectural and social evolution of the region, mixing residential and defensive functions. Its inscription in historical monuments underlines its historic importance in the department of Haute-Loire, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
