Origin and history
The château de la Borie-Chambarel, located in Céaux-d'Allègre en Haute-Loire, is a fortified house built in the 13th century, representative of Velay's defensive architecture. This monument, with an almost square plan, is flanked by four towers and extended by a wing of commons. Its holes were modified in the 15th century, and then in other periods, notably in the 18th century, where interior decorations (Louis XV lounge, bedroom-closed) were added or preserved.
The building was partially listed as historical monuments on June 2, 1976, protecting its facades, roofs, a spiral staircase with an oratory, as well as remarkable rooms such as the wooded living room on the ground floor and the closed bedroom on the first floor. These elements illustrate its architectural evolution and its adaptation to residential uses over the centuries.
Typical of Velay's fortified houses, this castle reflects local history, where these buildings served as both a seigneurial residence and a place of protection. Its interior, partially preserved, offers a testimony of the lifestyles and decorative tastes of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, notably through its Louis XV lounge and woodwork.
The location of the Borie-Chambarel, in a rural area of Haute-Loire, highlights its historical role in the feudal and post-feudal organization of the region. Today, there remains a notable architectural example, associated with the monumental heritage of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
