Origin and history

La Maison Foucart is a historic house located in Vézenobres, Gard department, Occitanie region. Built in the 16th century, it is distinguished by its preserved architecture, including a northern facade and an interior courtyard decorated with sculptures. These elements, together with the adjacent polygonal turret, were listed as historical monuments by order of 12 December 1963.

The building occupies the site of an old destroyed tower, of which only remains remains embedded in the current structure. The façade on Basse Street features carved sill windows, while the entrance door, framed by pilasters decorated with cabochons and diamond, is surmounted by a frieze decorated with vegetal motifs and a central shield. Two allegories, representing a woman and a man, symbolize prudence and strength respectively. An engraved date, 1547, at least attests to the period of realization of the carved decorations.

The polygonal turret, which dominates neighbouring buildings, ends with a platform supported by octagonal pillars. Its architecture, combined with the decorative elements of the courtyard, illustrates the Renaissance style present in southern France in the 16th century. Although partially modified over the centuries, the Foucart House remains a remarkable testimony to the civil heritage of this period.
