House, including plate pitch (cad. CD 25): registration by order of 14 August 2000
Origin and history
The villa Fourcade is a remarkable house located in the district of La Montagne, on the commune of Saint-Denis, in La Réunion. This French overseas department and region, located in the southwest of the Indian Ocean, houses a unique architectural heritage, of which this villa is an emblematic example. Its inclusion in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments, dated August 14, 2000, reflects its cultural and historical importance to the island.
The house, including its plate ground, is fully protected, as specified in the registration order. This type of construction often reflects La Réunion's colonial and mixed history, where European, African and Asian influences blend into architectural styles. Creole houses, such as the Fourcade villa, were generally residences of notables or landowners, playing a central role in the social and economic life of the island.
The area of La Montagne, where the villa is located, is an area of Saint-Denis marked by a more rugged relief than the city centre. This location, combined with the architecture of the house, offers an overview of the lifestyles of the local elites in the 18th and 19th centuries, periods during which these residences were often built. Today, the Fourcade villa remains a material testimony of this time, preserved for future generations.
