Origin and history
The house Frévol is a historic house located in Pradelles, in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 15th and 17th centuries, it is part of an architectural complex typical of medieval shopping villages, marked by arcade galleries on the ground floor. These buildings reflect the prosperity of the village, linked to its strategic position on the Regordane route, a major trade route of the Middle Ages.
The village of Pradelles, surrounded by ramparts, played a significant military and religious role, especially during the Wars of Religion in the sixteenth century. The wealthy families, made up of officers and merchants, built private hotels between the 15th and 17th centuries. Frévol House, which was listed as a historic monument in 1999, illustrates this lavish period when civil architecture developed in harmony with the region's commercial activities and defensive needs.
The architectural unit of Place de la Halle, where the Frévol house is located, comes from the repetition of arcade galleries, characteristic of the urban houses of the period. These elements, both practical and aesthetic, facilitated trade while sheltering the inhabitants. The protection of the house in 1999 underlines its heritage importance, both for its history and for its style representative of the merchant villages of Auvergne.
