Origin and history
The house, located in Nîmes, dating from the 18th century, has a rectangular architecture extended by a triangular courtyard shifted northward. Its façade, opened on the ground floor by two arches in the middle of the hanger, reveals a classical influence of the era. The windows on the first floor overlook a straight balcony, whose richly worked ironwork is a remarkable example of the local craftsmanship of the end of the century.
The balcony is distinguished by two large side panels framed by a central medallion representing a ship with sails deployed on a turbulent sea. This pattern could evoke a craft sign linked to the maritime world or a bourgeois coat of arms. The side panels, decorated with florets and branched volutes, are characterized by recasting and a double frame, typical of the late rock style. These decorative elements, combined with the precision of the details, suggest a careful realization, probably sponsored by an easy owner.
The house has been partially classified as a Historic Monument since 1964, with specific protection for its wrought iron balcony. This recognition underscores the heritage value of its ironwork, unique in the historic centre of Nîmes. The exact address, 23 rue de l'Etoile, and GPS location confirm its anchoring in the urban fabric, although the cartographic accuracy is considered poor (note 5/10).
The absence of sources detailing the original occupants or sponsors limits the knowledge of its social history. However, the architectural style and the patterns of the balcony suggest a connection with the flourishing commercial or craft activities in Nîmes in the 18th century, when the city was an economic crossroads in Languedoc.
