Door on street, including vantals: inscription by order of 15 May 1954

Origin and history

This house, located at 7 rue du Quatre-Septembre in Uzès, is an example of 17th century civil architecture, although this dating remains uncertain. It is distinguished by its street door, whose wooden vantals are decorated with square or rectangular panels, assembled by round nails aligned. Decorative motifs, such as oblique gridding and parallel grooves, reflect local craftsmanship. The lower part of the door was redone, but the original elements, protected by a decree of 15 May 1954, still bear witness to the carpentry techniques of the time.

The lateral vantals, in square shape, are characteristic of the Zetan houses of this period. The pedestrian vantail, with its central panel connected by a grooved frame, illustrates a regional tradition. The scabs, occupied by panels fixed by two nails, and details such as nails marking the centre of each panel, highlight an aesthetic that is both functional and decorative. This monument offers an overview of architectural and artisanal practices in Languedoc-Roussillon (now Occitanie) in the 17th century.

Classified as a Historic Monument for its door elements, this house embodies the vernacular heritage of Uzès. Its inscription in 1954 highlights the importance of preserving these architectural details, often neglected but revealing of the social and technical history of the region. The location, in the heart of the city, and the poor accuracy of its geolocation (note 5/10) recall the challenges of documentation of old buildings in densely built urban centres.
